The (CWD) Catholic Welfare and Development 40th Anniversary Fundraising Raceday

Kenilworth Racecourse

Wednesday 24th February 2010

It all started in 1797 on the spot chosen for the 2010 World Cup Stadium, and has for many years been home to one of South Africa’s best loved and most attractive racecourses. Kenilworth has played a prominent role in Cape Town’s Social and Sporting Life. It is therefore fitting that this famous venue is to host the CWD’s 40th Anniversary Race Day that is entirely in keeping with the Spirit of Sport as Cape Town celebrates all those many traditions and cultures which have over the past three and a half centuries made our City such a cosmopolitan meeting place of Nations and Faiths.

Kenilworth Racecourse has attracted a large number of the racing community. It has attracted people of all nations where men and woman from many backgrounds can rub shoulders and share in the passion and the thrill of an honest wager and seeing highly trained thoroughbred horses and fine jockeys in action. Kenilworth Racecourse has in many ways contributed to the well being of so many people in and around Cape Town and has never failed to host a successful Charity Raceday. Lets make the Buckets of Love Raceday…just that.

The CWD Raceday is a far cry from the days when soldiers of the Castle of Good hope back in 1797 raced their horses for rations at Green Point common bringing landau’s filled with dusky belles, wagonettes drawn by four or six horses decked with rosettes and streamers and not ashamed to exhibit bottle baskets with beer bottles merrily jingling the promise of much cheer to all. This led to a momentous day for the Cape. The Cape Town Gazette recorded a meeting on the 27th February 1802 of the African Turf Club at Africa House which overlooked what is now Adderley Street. The notice was signed by three stewards: (The Hon. Chas. Elphinstone. R.N. – Chas. Dickens – 34th Regiment, and John Pringle Esq.) and the South African Turf was founded and stationed at Kenilworth.

In 1814 Lord Charles Somerset, a very fine horseman, realised that in 1814 certain controls, rules and disciplines were very much needed and in no uncertain manner set about putting the record straight. Thus the signing on the 31st December 1814 of the Rules of Racing then to the founding of the Durbanville Gymkhana Club on the 26th October 1928 which raced until the formation of the Durbanville Turf Club on the 3rd August 1955 and staged it’s first official professional race on the 3rd January 1956. The first race being won by Setter, ridden by Danie Viljoen.
