Sivulile Educare in Phillipi Cape Town was recently host to 20 KLM airline crew members who visited the crèche to begin much-needed renovations.
Their efforts will benefit 60 children aged from birth and four years who depend on the humble shack to learn play – and eat – while their parents are at work.
‘We believe that knowledge is vital in preparing a child for a better future ’ said Robin Ruijter KLM Flight Attendant. ‘We want to make sure that the building is warm and able to keep the winter rain out.’
Excited teacher Bongiwe Pala said: ‘We were so worried about how we would keep the children warm and dry because the roof had so many cracks and holes but we don’t have to worry anymore. We also received many wonderful donations like reading and drawing material new mattresses for the babies’ cots as well as a fridge.’
This is not the first time that CWD and Wings of Support have joined forces. Over the last six years KLM staff have come to Cape Town with aim of improving the buildings where children are educated.
The team also spent time in Atlantis renovating CWD’s community development centre. The renovation could not have come at a better time as the centre has increased its services to the people of Atlantis and is now better equipped to meet the needs of this community.
* Wings of Support is a private initiative by KLM and Martinair staff which aims to support non-profit organisations that provide shelter and education to underprivileged children in the countries the airlines fly to.
Wings of Support offers hands-on involvement and covers the costs of their work.
