Catholic Welfare & Development (CWD) planned prepared and delivered!  The recent succesfully concluded  Fifa 2010  World Cup challenged  the organization to use its resources to cater for tourists local fans but also   implement programmes to keep  school children in poorer areas safe over the long 5 week holiday.

To add to the mix   the Shwe Shwe Dove Tea Room & Craft Shop ideally situated on the “Fan Walk” to the Greenpoint Stadium took its first baby steps as the new charity shop on 37 A Somerset Rd.  The Tea Room    offered food and refreshments big screen  television for  fans passing through and an opportunity to browse and purchase exquisitely made craft in the Craft Shop.  The shop has received generous funding from the women' s group from St Michaels Parish in Rondebosh. On match days the street was filled with entertainment from CWD’s Youth Interfacing Programme getting the crowds to dance to the African beat. More than 30 000 visitors walked the route on the first opening match day alone.

width=200As part of CWD's development responsibilities it also aware of the problems that school children and parents face with a long 5 week school holiday and the challenges to keep children safe and occupied. Special holiday programmes and workshops were introduced at CWD's centres and more than 200 children per day   attended centres in Khayelitsha Tafelsig Elsies River Atlantis and Mbekweni. Special workshops on topics like human trafficking were also conducted.

“We have had a wonderful 2010 tournament and CWD has been privileged to be the only charity on the fanwalk- being part of the entertainment and feeling the pulse but also marketing some of our programmes generating income for our coffers ” Lungisa Huna CWD director said.
