Recycling ... for GOOD
CWD’s Women In Need (WIN) programme runs a recycling initiative which not only helps the environment but helps people to earn an income.
Jeremiah – one of 17 vendors who collect glass bottles for this programme – has health problems and hasn’t been able to find work.
‘This helps me to buy food. I start collecting bottles from bars hotels restaurants and pool clubs in my area at six o’clock in the morning’ he explains.
Buyers
Vendors receive R15 for every bin they fill – and on some days one vendor brings in enough bottles to fill four bins!
The next step is to train Jeremiah to establish himself as a buyer – so that he can earn more money and create a small business for himself. WIN Outreach Workers Chris Visagie and Marlene Jansen explain:
‘The programme aims to empower people to become independent – which gives them back their dignity.' WIN intends to introduce its recycling programme to other areas – so that more needy people can start to generate their own income.
